How to Fill Out a Non-Fillable PDF Quickly

If you click a blank line on a PDF form and nothing happens, the form is probably non-fillable. It looks like a form, but the blanks are just part of the page design, not fields you can type into.

You can still fill it out. Instead of typing into the form, you type on top of it. In Type PDF, you don't need to draw a text box for each blank first. You just click the blank and type.

Steps

  1. Open the file in Type PDF with Choose PDF.
  2. Click at the start of a blank line or inside an answer box.
  3. Type your answer.
  4. Click the next blank and keep going. Adjust the size or position of any answer that doesn't sit neatly.
  5. When the form is complete, select Download PDF.

If the form has tick boxes, set Shift + click to add a checkmark. Then you can fill in text and checkboxes without switching tools.

You don't need to convert the file to Word or add form fields first.

Making answers fit

Keep short answers on one line. For something longer, like an address or a written explanation, use a wrapping text box and size it to the space on the form.

Don't shrink the text until it's hard to read. If your answer really won't fit, check whether the form allows you to attach an extra page.

What this doesn't do

This fills out your copy of the form. It doesn't turn the PDF into a fillable form that other people can use. For that, you'd need a form-building tool.

When you download, choose Editable PDF to keep editing in Type PDF later, or Flattened PDF for the copy you submit.
